Thai Cultural Orientation
for Foreign Teachers (as required by the Phuket Provincial Education Board) Including S.E.Asia and Asia in general. Language, Traditions and custom, Religion and Society.

The course includes an overview of the English language, grammar and parts of speech with an emphasis on form, function, and phonology. Language structure and usage are examined relative to foreign learners. This includes a detailed look at Thai language structure and anticipated learning problems for Thai students. Teacher trainees learn to estimate teaching time and how to sequence logical teaching lessons. Different types of lessons are studied: structural, functional and skills lessons-with emphasis on their effectiveness and contribution to a balanced syllabus. An overall study of teaching skills explores listening, comprehension, pronunciation, communication, reading, and writing.
Language Analysis (30%)
Teaching Methodology (35%)
The course gives trainees a chance to make practical use of their theoretical knowledge. Teaching practice takes place in the classroom and with learners of various levels outside the classroom itself. Trainees present different types of lessons as monitored practice within the classroom. Trainees learn how to critique their own as well as other people's lessons, with emphasis on team building and positive feedback. By the third week of the six-week course, trainees are ready to begin a 'teaching internship' with actual Thai learners outside of the TEFL classroom. The opportunity to lead six to twelve hours of actual classroom time is an invaluable part of the 'learning to teach' process.
Through demonstration, a hands-on approach to teaching is emphasized. Techniques learned include giving instructions, eliciting, modeling, highlighting, checking, correcting, whiteboard use, voice projection and manner. Trainees learn classroom control and addressing special-needs students-as well as how to evaluate materials specific to the learners' language needs, and cultural awareness with Thai and foreign learners. Trainees learn how to use course books effectively, appropriate uses for communication activities (games, music, role plays), how to test, and devise successful lessons and curriculum.
